ENG 105 - Fundamentals of Oral Communication

Useful content for Speakers.

Why cite sources?

Citation is a form of communication among researchers.

  • It is a format agreed on by researchers so that people writing in a discipline can figure out where the original researcher went for his/her information.
  • Quality of resources matters. Going to the National Inquirer for information is not as good as going to the New York Times. The New York Times is more respected, which means that the quality of the information is higher.
  • Always cite your sources. If you don't, you'll be plagiarizing, which is a very unethical thing to do.
  • Plagiarism is an academic crime, but it is also theft, because you are stealing another person's work.
  • STCC has a plagiarism policy, which was created to provide a process of penalties for plagiarism, even if inadvertent.

Use these tools to get citation help

Below are some free citation tools, librarians are also available to help!

Annotated Bibliography

Annotated biblioraphies are a list of sources on the same subject where each source is described in a handful of sentences. Annotated lists of sources are useful as a guide for your readers as well as to keep track of your sources for your own research.

Citing Web Videos

Not all elements of the citation template below may be present, in which case fill in the pertinent information as best as possible.

[Author.] [Title.] [Date of Original Work] [Site Name.] [Editor.] [Date Posted.] [Publisher Name.] [Larger Work Title] [Media Type.] [Date Accessed.] [‹ url ›].

Example from YouTube:

40 Inspirational Speeches In 2 Minutes. youtube.com. MBelinke. 10 Dec. 2008. Video. 6 June 2009 ‹ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6wRkzCW5qI ›

Example of an Original Work posted to YouTube:

Note: If the web video is a recording of an original work then the posting date is not necessary. Depending on the orginal work (i.e. speech, performance, etc.) you may need to place quotes around or italicize the title. If cited piece is apart of a larger work, include italicized title of the larger work when available. If original publications date is not available use posting date.
