About this Guide

This site is intended to serve as a guide to the works of Nikki Giovanni, with special emphasis on books and other materials found in the STCC Library. This guide was created to help promote Nikki Giovanni's appearance at STCC on Friday, October 31st at 10 a.m. in the Building 2 gymnasium.


STCC Welcomes Nikki Giovanni

Award-winning poet and educator Nikki Giovanni will visit STCC on Friday, October 31st. The event, to be held at 10 a.m. in the Scibelli Hall gymnasium, is presented by the STCC Diversity Council.

Nikki Giovanni was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Lincoln Heights, an all-black suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Fisk University, her grandfather's alma mater, in 1968. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She published her first book of poetry, Black Feeling Black Talk, in 1968.

Ms. Giovanni has won the NAACP Image Award three times. Her children's book, Rosa, based on the life of Rosa Parks, was a Caldecott Honors book.

The author of some 30 books for adults and children, Nikki Giovanni is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
