Acronyms for STCC: A

This is a list of terms used on the campus

A

  • A.A. (Associate in Arts) = a two-year academic degree for students who expect to transfer to a four-year institution for a bachelor’s degree. (AA also stands for Amino Acid).
     
  • AACC = American Association of Community Colleges
     
  • A.A.T.S.P. = American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
     
  • ABE = Adult Basic Education; pre=college classes for individuals whose reading & math skills are below the high school level (grades 0 = 8).  
     
  • ABET = Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
     
  • ACADEMIC PROGRAMS = All Academic Programs have an acronym.  Rather than recreating the list, <control>click here for a link to the entire list of associate degrees and certificates offered by the college. 
     
  • ADA = Americans with Disabilities Act.
     
  • AEC = Adult Education Center 
     
  • ‚ÄčAFSCME = American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (one of two unions on campus)  
     
  • AHSS = Please see SAHSS 
     
  • AIC = American International College 
     
  • AMCOA = Advancing Massachusetts’ Culture of Assessment. A group out of the DHE’s Vision Project led by a team of faculty and staff from each of the 28 undergraduate campuses, with a goal of helping every campus improve curriculum and learning through development of state-of-the-art programs of learning outcomes assessment. 
     
  •  A.S. = (Associate in Science) – a two-year technical/occupational degree  for students who expect to start employment once the degree is earned.     
  •  ASCAP = American Society of Composer, Authors and Publishers, a performing rights organization; the College has a license permitting the public performance of songs.  
     
  • ATB = Ability to benefit. Often used to describe adult/returning learners who will thrive in academic environments. 
     
  • ATD = Achieving the Dream - STCC is part of this initiative started by the Lumina Foundation and seven founding partner organizations, Achieving the Dream now leads the most comprehensive non-governmental reform movement for student success in higher education history.  
     
  • ASCE = American Society of Civil Engineers
     
  • ASEE = Association for Engineering Education.
     
  • ASME = American Society of Mechanical Engineers
     
  • AUC = All Unit Council. The college’s shared governance body. All employees below the level of director are automatically members, regardless of shift or full time/part time status.
